Major Peewee A Kanata Blazers Win Bell Capital Cup PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 January 2010
The coaching staff and parents of the major peewee A Kanata Blazers would like to congratulate their players for an outstanding week of hockey ending with a victory in the championship game.

The team started the week with two exhibition games, against the Orange Country Hockey Club and the New England Falcons.  After the game against the California team, our team hosted a pizza party where the highlight of the night was a lesson in the fine Canadian art of making and throwing snowballs!
The next morning we played our first round robin game against South Grenville Rangers, emerging with our first victory of the tournament thanks to lots of goals shared between all three offensive lines, including hat tricks from Quinn Gordon and Adam Milito.
Later that day we faced the Napanee Stars  in a nail biter, emerging with a narrow 1-0 victory.  The game was won with a beautiful goal from forward Troy MacTavish, assisted by defencemen Kevin Bulmer and Leah Scott as well as a stellar performance in net by Harrison Witt.
In our third round robin game we took on the Orillia Terriers.  Tied 1-1 in the second period, the Blazers exploded with three goals in seven minutes.  The Terriers scored early in the third period, but the Blazers then put the icing on the cake with three more goals in a three minute time span, including a blistering shot from defenceman Devan Kealey.
After the skills competition, our team played in an elimination round against the North London Nationals.  This was another very exciting game that went right down to the wire, with a spectacular goal by forward Jerry Cole in the second period, assisted by defenceman Gregory Wasylasko.  The victory was sealed with an empty net goal by forward Jake Taylor, assisted by defenceman Charles Wickham.
In the quarter-final game Saturday morning we played the Valley Storm.   The game was fairly close until an awesome save, worthy of “TSNs TOP TEN”,  by goaltender Declan Morey,  inspired his teammates,  resulting in an explosion of four goals in seven minutes in the third period starting with a beauty from Michael Hauschild.  Multiples points were assigned to forwards Troy MacTavish, Nick Desjardins, Adam Milito and Quinn Gordon with defensive assists going to Jordan Lopez and Kevin Bulmer.
The semi-final game brought on the dreaded Ottawa Valley Silver Seven Black team.  The line consisting of Mathieu Syrenne, Jerry Cole, and Matthew  Halciopoulos stole the show this game, with an awesome display of passing and scoring, giving the Blazers a 3-1 victory and a visit to the Championship game.
Sunday morning we met the Kingston Canadiens in the championship game, played at Scotiabank Place.  Down 2-0 four minutes into the second period, coach Kevin MacTavish asked veteran Mathieu Syrenne, playing in his fourth BCC final, to light a spark to inspire his teammates .  Forget a spark, Mathieu started a bonfire!  rushing  down the ice, assisted by another great pass from linemate Jerry Cole, Mathieu “popped it in the net.”  Three more unanswered goals by the Blazers, all assisted by Syrenne, sealed our victory.
The team displayed incredible spirit, good sportsmanship, and determination all week, winning nine games in seven days with skilled offence, solid defence, and amazing goal tending, very deserving champions.  The only thing lost all week was their manager’s voice!  Proud coaching staff include head coach Kevin MacTavish, assistant coaches Phil Morey, Ken Taylor and Tony Lopez, trainer Nancy Desjardins and manager Lori Bulmer.
